Website Redesign

Powered by Drupal

It has been a while (almost a year) since I posted about the state of my website. I greatly enjoy my attempts to clean it up and make it work the way I want it to. Over the past couple of weeks, I gave the site a pretty major overhaul visually. If you are running your own Drupal installation or are just curious what I've done to the site you might find this a handy guide.

  1. Drupal 6.15 - This is the most recent version. I do my best to keep up to date with the security updates as no one likes to get their system hacked. Not much fancy out of the core but I've turned on the Database logging, Statistics and Search features. Mostly I use this to keep track of people coming in and if they're hitting broken links. I hate that.
  2. Analytic Theme - This theme is one of the best I've found. It had a large number of spaces, most of which I'm not actually using. I picked this one because I really like the built in login and RSS links right up on the top right and when I'm logged in as an admin user it has the major admin menus up.
  3. Image Module - I've had this one installed for a while, only recently was I able to figure out that I needed to make a new image size grouping and assign it to nodes. Before then it was putting the original size pictures onto the page and eating up screen space. This has been fixed. In addition, the mass import module is working so I can now import older pictures. Did that after deciding that Coppermine wasn't what I was looking for. The gallery is now part of the main menu.
  4. Links Package - I was using both weblinks and links package for a while. Weblinks seems to be the newer and better maintained one but Links package has all the features I was looking for so it won out. I can now add links to any page or create a page entirely dedicated to a single link. These bookmarks are now part of the main menu.
  5. Insertframe - This is actually one of the first modules I ever installed on the site, but since I'm talking about things that are on the main menu, I figured it was worth mentioning. Archives is a listing of various sites that aren't the main site that I'm hosting for various reasons. Most of them are old defunct sites that I hold onto for nostalgia.
  6. Follow Module - I was going to make a formatted user profile page but then I realized that I really am the only user on the site so why not just make another page dedicated to who I am. You can find it by clicking on 'About'. The Follow module creates a menu of links with icons in a block. I put it up on my about page out of convenience.
  7. Twitter - I'd been using Ping.fm for posting but I've moved to having Twitter feed into everything else so twitter was the better choice. It is also a better supported module. One major benefit was the recent tweets block that I was able to put on the 'About' page.
  8. Taxonomy Menu - Speaking of blocks on pages, I wanted something to keep track of subsections within each of the major categories on the main menu (Home, Bookmarks, Gallery, Archives). I've been assigning taxonomy to these already and at first I just was going to create new menus and put them in blocks.. but it is a fair amount of work to add new ones. So Taxonomy menu takes a look at my existing taxonomy and does all that work for me. Bonus.
  9. Disqus - The last major module installation, Disqus replaces drupals built in commenting system. I don't get a ton of comments and I want people to be able to do it as easily as possible. This single module setup replaces 5 or so anti-spamming measures I had in place as part of just maintaining comments. Now the options are upgraded for me via the service.
  10. Minor sharing Modules - I put in a number of little modules to help me share information and keep track of visitors. Feedjit tracks where people are coming from. Google Friend Connect lets people becomes 'fans' of the site.. so far its just me however. Feedburner helps track who is following the site over RSS. Trackback lets people post comments on their own site that reference my site. Add to Any lets visitors share specific articles to any of a number of sharing sites they belong to.
  11. The future - I'd like to add in some video posting abilities.. but until I find something I like, I'll just stick to youtube.
