Big Planet Comics

Big Planet Comics

A few years ago I was in the midst of my first Mutants and Mastermind's game and started getting into comics. It started out with a few graphic novels as I worked my way through Neil Gaiman's Sandman series. I made the leap to stand alone comics when DC put out their 52 series. I was drawn in to the series by the promise of an entire year where I didn't have to know what was going on in any other comics and could just read that one comic. It of course didn't stay there. As the guys at the gaming table said, it was my gateway drug.

My 'dealer' of choice was Big Planet Comics. I had heard of Big Planet before then as they had a horribly cheesy commercial that they ran on the SciFi network involving cutout clip art of DC comics. It was enough to make me hesitant even but the local Borders' comic book selection was minimal and inconsistent. The walk from work down to the Big Planet Comics in Georgetown is about a mile and a half. Three miles there and back. Not so bad if I stop in the park and have my lunch before going back to work.

That was a couple years ago now. Not too long ago I got myself a pull box with them. For the 'promise' that I'm going to purchase a certain number of comics per month (that I was going to be purchasing anyway) I get the benefit of having my comics put aside and a flat 10% discount per comic. The people there are friendly and there are usually a few freebies out and about. Still haven't watched the season 1 DVD of Kyle XY that I grabbed for free.

All in all, if you're in the DC area, Big Planet is your best bet for a quality local comic shop. Highly recommended.
